How can India rank higher in Human Capital Index?

How can India rank higher in Human Capital Index?

India has ranked 105 in the latest Human Capital Index (2016) among 130 countries. Only 25 countries are lower than India in this index. How can India rank higher in Human Capital Index? This is a real challenge for India. India needs to do a lot on this front.

Vardhaman Infotech, Jaipur has gone into the detailed study of the scenario. We have studied the history of Indian Human Resource Development, transformations from time to time, international interventions especially at the colonial time, political and social movements and several other aspects to reach some conclusions. As an Information Technology firm, Vardhaman Infotech has to deal with the latest technologies and trained human resources. We have worldwide clients from different walks of industries, institutions, and people at large. These give us exposure to current human resource and other scenarios.

India has achieved the highest global growth rate and has a 6th highest asset in the world. The country also has the highest number of youth and large numbers of the educated workforce in the world. It has a strong banking system and huge foreign currency reserve. India is also a top destination for global investors. Despite all these positive indicators, it is shameful to be ranked 105 in HCI. As an India IT Company, we feel concerned about the same.

Why is India ranked so lower in HCI? This is a million dollar question and all of us have to search the answer. The root cause problem lies in our education system. We are following, by and large, the same British education system as designed by Lord  Macaulay in the early nineteenth century.

British rulers systematically destroyed the ancient Indian education system to achieve their colonization goals. They needed clerks and only clerks to run their administrative system. They wanted to destroy the productivity of Indians to push merchandise made in England. Hence, they designed syllabi not to educate but to brainwash Indian students.

Unfortunately, our policymakers continued with the same system and our universities continue to produce educated unemployed.  However, some of our institutions like IITs and IIMs produce world-class engineers and managers. But they are only tips of the iceberg.

We need job-oriented training programs to develop skill among our students. We need to bridge the gap between education and industry demand. Moreover, we require to focus on the cognitive development of our pupil in place of number-oriented memorizing patterns. It will be better if the policymakers in India will consider this. Billions are spent on literacy and not for real education.

India has to think about developing Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) and other non-traditional methods for manufacturing sectors. We have to train people as per industry specific demands of service sector employees. We need to focus on "Entrepreneurship and Managerial skill development programs". Applying all these measures along with a little focus on health issues and work environment, we can go higher in global ranking in the Human Capital Index.

Last but not least, we must have a concern with brain-drain or Human capital flight.
